Today, President Trump signed an executive order freeing Jan. 6 insurrectionists, including those who committed acts of violence against police officers.

As one of his first official acts as the 47th President of the United States, Trump commuted the sentences of 14 prominent participants of the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol. He also granted an unconditional pardon to everyone else involved, according to a Presidential proclamation posted on the White House’s official site.

Fraternal Order of Police Speak Out Against Trump

Trump’s executive action drew the ire of the Fraternal Order of Police and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, which released a joint statement condemning the pardons.

“Crimes against law enforcement are not just attacks on individuals or public safety — they are attacks on society and undermine the rule of law,” the Jan. 21 statement said. “Allowing those convicted of these crimes to be released early diminishes accountability and devalues the sacrifices made by courageous law enforcement officers and their families.”

Around 140 police officers were injured during the Capitol riots, which also caused $2,734,783 worth of damage, according to a Justice Department statement.

The FOP endorsed Trump in his recent Presidential campaign.
